WILLIAMS CALLS ON DEFRA TO SUPPORT AGRICULTURE

September 10, 2010 9:31 AM

Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, used today's Environment Food and Rural Affairs Oral Question session to seek reassurances that DEFRA would support agriculture.

Roger Williams said:

"There is an increasing pressure on farmers to produce more food whilst taking into account the need to maintain good environmental practices in terms of biodiversity, animal welfare, energy use and a number of other matters.

"Farmers are keen to face up to this challenge but it is important that they are given the support that they require by the Department in order to achieve these goals.

"I used this morning's question session to ask the Secretary of State to ensure that DEFRA takes a lead in this matter.

"The response I received from the Secretary of State that DEFRA's number one priority was to support farming, is most encouraging.

"I will continue to maintain pressure on DEFRA in support of British agriculture and hope to see the Department publish their vision for sustainable agriculture as soon as possible as an important first step."

If you are a resident of the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
