Growth of Allotments Across UK a Big Boost to Sustainability Says Williams
Brecon & Radnorshire's MP Roger Williams visited the new allotments at Presteigne on Saturday (14th Aug.) as a guest of the Presteigne & Norton Allotment Association, which was running an open day as part of the National Allotment Week celebrations.
The creation of the allotments at Lower Went's Meadow on the edge of Presteigne is the culmination of a vigorous campaign by local campaigners to gain possession of the land, leading to the opening of the new allotment site at the end of March this year by Mr. Williams, who had lent his strong support to the campaign.
Praising the efforts of all involved, Roger Williams said:
" I was delighted to be able to attend the open day last Saturday and see what an amazing amount of work has been put in to the allotments in the few short months since the opening on a cold, wet evening in March. Just a few months before that it seemed that the Association would continue to be frustrated in its efforts to find and develop a site. But I am delighted that Preteigne Town Council and the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, which previously managed the site, were able to assist and allow the project to proceed."
" It is a tribute to all involved that so much has been achieved in such a short space of time to create such a wonderful facility, which will give the allotment holders much pleasure and contribute a great deal to making the Presteigne and Norton area more sustainable. This is a significant step in the development of Presteigne as a Transition Town."
" I believe the huge growth in interest in allotments across the UK is going to be a major contribution to improving sustainability in the UK and the Presteigne and Norton area is now playing its full part in that!"
