Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, has voiced his concern at today's United Nations' (UN) report into food security.
The joint report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) suggests that food prices will rise by over 40% in the coming decade.
The increase in prices is expected to be largely driven by increased demand from emerging markets and could lead to widespread food insecurity and hunger, the report warns.
Roger Williams said:
"The global population is expected to reach 8.3 billion people by 2030 and, as a result of growing wealth in many developing nations, demand for food will increase by 50%. By 2050 the demand for food will increase by 100% on the current level and agriculture will be in the front line of delivering.
"This, coupled with the increase in food prices, will cause huge problems and means that the Government must take all necessary steps to ensure that the UK is secure in terms of food production.
"Additionally, the UK must ensure that it can provide sufficient food to those areas that may not be able to produce it themselves as a result of climate change and rising sea levels.
"Britain is ideally suited to assist with rising food security concerns and should make research and development in the agriculture sector a priority.
"This would ensure that we are not caught out domestically by rising prices and demand and that British food producers can benefit abroad."
