Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon and Radnorshire Roger Williams has welcomed today's budget announcement that 50,000 workers in Wales will be taken out of income tax as protection against the necessary cuts made in the budget.
Commenting, Roger Williams said:
"Today's budget was always going to be tough, but action has to be taken now to safeguard our finances in the future.
"No-one likes cuts, but this Budget has struck the right balance between finding essential cuts and protecting frontline services.
"Labour are trying to have their cake and eat it. They want deficit reduction, but they won't say how they would pay for it."
On the increase in the personal allowance, Roger said:
"50,000 workers in Wales will be taken out of income tax, with many more receiving a £200 tax cut. This is positive action that will safeguard the lowest-paid when the cuts are implemented.
"All parties accepted that cuts are necessary before the election, even if some seem to be changing their tune now, but what is vital is that action is taken to protect the most vulnerable and this is what this Budget has done.
"We face some tough times ahead, but this announcement makes clear that the Coalition Government is putting the low-paid first."
On the increase in VAT, Roger added:
"An increase in VAT is extremely regrettable, and was to be avoided if possible, but the Government is in an extremely difficult position, and it is hard to see how else this money could have been raised.
"The action taken to reduce income tax for lower-paid workers will ensure fairness, and I am pleased that the Chancellor acknowledged that while we are all in this together, the poorest must be protected."
