Commenting on media reports today, Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, has said that the International Whaling Commission (IWC) should not be held to ransom by Japan.
Japan has suggested that it might be prepared to leave the IWC if there is not an agreement to relax the rules around whaling.
The IWC will meet next week in Agadir, Morocco, to seek a compromise between pro and anti whaling nations.
Mr Williams said:
"A moratorium on whaling has been in place for 25 years, yet Japan has flouted this agreement so to raise the possibility of quitting the IWC if they aren't allowed to continue whaling is nonsense.
"It is important that Japan is kept within the IWC so that the level of whaling does not increase and the entire agreement doesn't fall apart but member states must not be scared into giving into Japan by this latest manoeuvre.
"In the 21st Century there is no place for whaling regardless of whether it is for commercial or scientific purposes and all steps should be taken to reduce the number of Whales caught, not allow the numbers to increase.
"I hope that the UK Government will do all in their power to oppose the introduction of any new forms of whaling and that any changes introduced to the current legislation make it harder to continue whaling, not easier."
