Roger Williams, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Brecon and Radnorshire, recently addressed the Brecon Chamber of Commerce to discuss a range of issues.
Speaking after the event, Mr Williams said:
"I was delighted to be invited to speak to the Brecon Chamber of Commerce about the many issues of concern to them."
"Amongst the issues raised were business rates. I well understand why this matter is high on the Chamber's agenda, as many businesses have received staggering rises in their business rate demands for this year. Particularly in the current economic climate these increases are very damaging to economic recovery and pose a serious threat to the future of many businesses in Brecon & Radnorshire."
"Over the past few years I have raised the plight of small businesses and the issue of business rates at Westminster with Ministers many times. Although I am pleased the Welsh Government has now introduced an enhanced rate relief scheme for small businesses in Wales, it does not 'kick in' until October and there is still much to do to support our local businesses through these difficult times. If re-elected as MP support to small businesses will be one of my main priorities."
"The economy, both locally and nationally, is still fragile. It is vital that the needs of local businesses are met to ensure the sustainability of rural communities across Brecon and Radnorshire."
"The Brecon Chamber of Commerce does a wonderful job representing the interests of local entrepreneurs and it is testament to their hard work that while many chambers in the UK have closed, this chamber is still actively representing the needs of its members."
