Brecon and Radnorshire's MP, Roger Williams has this month signed up to the Fuel Poverty Charter Wales. Currently around one in four households in Wales are suffering the misery of fuel poverty, unable to enjoy a warm home. People who are spend more than 10% of their annual income on their fuel bills are said to be in fuel poverty.
Roger Williams said:
"Across the constituency I meet people, often elderly and vulnerable, who take the decision to switch off their heating, even at the coldest time of year as they cannot afford the bills. I have pledged my support for the Fuel Poverty Campaign and I, along with my Liberal Democrat colleagues want to see fuel poverty eradicated from our society. The effects of cold weather can be devastating on families, in particular elderly people and people who are less mobile".
The Charter calls for:
1. A detailed action plan setting out how and when fuel poverty will be eradicated in Wales;
2. Support for all fuel poor households to stay warm - until fuel poverty is eradicated;
3. A co-ordinated and united approach across the statutory sector (at UK and Wales level) that involves partners from the private, voluntary and community sectors in Wales.
