MP POSITIVE ABOUT INNOVATIVE CROSFIELD HOUSE PLAN

December 3, 2009 11:38 AM

Brecon & Radnorshire's MP Roger Williams has praised innovative proposals for the future running of Crosfield House Residential and Nursing Home in Rhayader, Powys, which could involve the home being run under a social enterprise scheme, rather than it being sold to another provider. Expert advice on that option is being provided and legal advice and guidance has been sought from the Welsh Government.

The MP discussed the future plans at a recent meeting organised by Rhayader's County Councillor Kelvyn Curry, with Phil Robson, Powys County Council's Director of Social Services, Council Board Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care, Cllr. Rosemarie Harris, four members of staff from the home and Cllr Curry.

It is likely that the home's current owners, the Royal British Legion, will put the home on the market within the next few weeks. The four members of staff were able to confirm that staff have good plans for the future running of Crosfield House and ideas for expanding services there, to include daycare and the delivery of domiciliary care.

Commenting after the meeting, Lisa Hutchinson said:

" I am very pleased with the outcome of the meeting. Staff are committed to maintaining this facility in Rhayader and it is very important that we do all we can to keep the jobs that the home provides in the town. The staff are particularly enthusiastic about the social enterprise model being developed."

Cllr. Rosemarie Harris added:

" Powys County Council has already committed to purchasing a block booking of 30 beds at the home, nearly half the capacity there. The Council is committed to doing whatever it can to see the home retained, not least because the task of finding alternative provision for residents locally is likely to prove very difficult."

Cllr. Kelvyn Curry expressed his satisfaction:

" All the interested parties are working closely together to help safeguard the home, which is a vital part of the local community, both economically and socially. It is so important that we do whatever we can to make sure the residents and their families, as well as the staff, are protected and supported as much as possible while this transition takes place. "

Mr. Williams concluded:

" I am very pleased to be able to act as a point of co-ordination between the staff and residents of the home, Powys County Council and the Welsh Government. Things are developing in a positive way and I am very hopeful about the future."
