Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, and Lembit Opik, MP for Montgomeryshire, attended an event with Radnorshire Healthy Friendship's on Friday, at which the organisation received a cheque from the Big Lottery for £242,719.00 to support their work.

Radnorshire Healthy Friendships supports mainly older people who experience mental distress, helping them live happier, healthier and more fulfilled lives.

Commenting today, Mr Williams said:

"I would like to congratulate them on securing more funding to continue their valuable work of supporting people suffering from mental illnesses in rural areas.

"Radnorshire Healthy Friendships started five years ago and thanks to Stuart Beesley and his dedicated volunteers this organisation has made a real difference to the quality of life of many people and it is great that this is set to continue for the foreseeable future

Mr Opik said:

"I warmly welcome the Healthy Friendship group to Montgomeryshire.

"The organisation has clearly made a real impression on the Big Lottery Fund as well as those people the group has served in Brecon and Radnorshire. This award recognises the great contribution that this Befriending programme can make to the lives of vulnerable people and I wish them well in their work."

Sarah Betts, Healthy Friendship's Chair person, said:

"We are delighted with this funding. It means so much for our Members and our new Members here in Montgomeryshire."

"We are about to introduce a Befriending programme into Montgomeryshire. We will soon recruit three new staff that will be trained to lead a team of Volunteers. This money will enable us to support people in rural areas doing the things that they can't do alone."

If you are a resident of the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
