Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, today used a Westminster Hall debate to raise the issue of funding for the training of probation officers and questioned whether the money provided could have been better spent.
Speaking after the debate, Mr Williams said:
"In the Dyfed-Powys Probation area there were 7 people trained to be probation officers in the last year, yet once their training was complete only one was offered a full time position and the other 6 were given temporary contracts that will expire in March.
"It costs £100,000 to train one probation officer over two years. If money is to be provided for the training of probation officers then it is essential that jobs are available locally for those trainees.
"To do otherwise is not only a waste of time for those that have undertaken the training but is also a waste of funds that could be better directed towards other services within the criminal justice system.
"I hope that the minister will take on board the concerns I have raised and ensure that there are sufficient opportunities for those that have taken the time to learn the necessary skills for a desperately needed section of the criminal justice system are able to secure employment once they have completed their training."
