Kirsty Williams and Roger Williams, the Liberal Democrat AM and MP for Brecon & Radnorshire, the most rural constituency in England and Wales, have warmly welcomed their party conference's backing this week for a policy to reduce fuel duty and cut vehicle excise duty (road tax) by 50% in the most rural parts of the UK, where car use is a necessity.
Claiming the policy would be a big boost for local communities and the rural economy, Roger Williams said:
"I have long campaigned for the UK Government to reduce road tax in rural areas, in recognition of the extra costs that people and businesses in rural areas face, both from the distances they have to travel and the fact that fuel is more expensive to buy in rural areas than in towns and cities. My recent petition calling for this attracted thousands of signatures in Brecon & Radnorshire. So, I am delighted that my party has agreed new policies that will benefit rural areas so much."
Adding her welcome, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Kirsty Williams said:
"There is no doubt that areas like Brecon & Radnorshire, Montgomeryshire, Ceredigion and many other parts of Wales would all qualify as places where car use is a necessity, not a luxury. For many families, having to have more than one car is essential, for example to get to work. But the burden of doing so on family budgets is enormous. Given that they have to use 4x4 vehicles, a 50% cut in road tax would benefit an average farming family by as much as £200 per car per year. So these Liberal Democrat policies would provide a massive boost to the people and economy of rural Wales."
