Brecon & Radnorshire's Liberal Democrat MP, Roger Williams, recently met with the Director of the leading housing charity, Shelter Cymru, John Puzey and its Political Director, Ms. Jo Roberts, to discuss the wide range of housing problems that face people in the Brecon & Radnorshire constituency and more widely across Wales. The meeting particularly focused on the continuing lack of affordable public and private-sector housing to rent and how that especially causes problems for young people; the need to bring currently unoccupied housing back in to use; and the problems facing home owners struggling to meet mortgage payments during the economic downturn.
Mr. Williams commented:-
" I have always admired the work of Shelter Cymru and have found the charity's assistance in helping to resolve housing problems for constituents absolutely invaluable. Shelter Cymru's current focus on drawing attention to the thousands of empty properties that could be brought back in to use to help tackle the mounting levels of homelessness and continued lack of affordable housing for rent is very timely. There are a number of options that local authorities can use to assist private property owners to restore the use of these houses and this is an issue that I will be raising with Ministers at Westminster and Cardiff Bay."
" Another aspect of Shelter Cymru's work that is often overlooked is its ability to provide advice and support to home owners struggling with mortgage payments or facing re-possession. I urge anyone facing these types of housing difficulties to contact Shelter Cymru on 0845 075 5005, where they will receive sound and impartial advice."
