LIB. DEMS. WELCOME SUPERMARKET OMBUDSMAN CALL

August 5, 2009 10:39 AM

The Liberal Democrats Food & Rural Affairs Spokesman and Shadow Welsh Secretary, Roger Williams MP, has warmly welcomed the news that the Competition Commission is now recommending that the Government creates a Supermarket Ombudsman to oversee the operation of the big food retailers in the market place.

Commenting on the news the Brecon & Radnorshire MP said:

This is good news indeed and a vindication of over a decade of campaigning by farmers, food suppliers and politicians to get this issue taken seriously. I am proud that it has been the Liberal Democrats who have led the call for an investigation in to the dominance of the big supermarket firms in the UK marketplace and for the creation of a supermarket ombudsman.

The Competition Commission is clear in its view that the current market dominance and activities of the big supermarket firms is bad not just for farmers and food producers, but also for consumers. The Government must act now. It has waited for far too long already.
