MINISTERIAL U-TURN ON GURKHAS IS OUTRAGEOUS- WILLIAMS

May 8, 2009 9:04 AM

Commenting today on the news that the UK Borders Agency had refused residency rights in four out of five Gurkha test cases, Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnor and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, has branded the Government u-turn 'outrageous'.

Mr Williams said:

"Just last week a vote was held in Parliament to ensure that all Gurkhas were given equal residency rights, regardless of when they served in the British Army.

"The Prime Minister had previously said that the Government would 'listen to the voice of the House' and that he would take personal charge of this matter.

"Today the UK Borders Agency has announced that 4 of the 5 test cases were refused and that letters were sent to these Gurkhas to inform them that there right to remain in the UK had been rejected.

"Now the Immigration Minister, Phil Woolas MP, has said that these cases will be reconsidered.

"Clearly the Government does not know what one department is doing from another.

"For those people who served in the British Army and were willing to die for this country, the least we can do is give them the right to settle here when their service is complete.

"I hope that an urgent review will be undertaken and that this outrageous treatment of the Gurkha veterans will be resolved in their favour as soon as possible."

If you are a resident of the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
