Following a Westminster Hall Debate, Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of state for Wales, has called on the Government to provide more motorcycle test centres to cope with the new two-test module that will be introduced next week.
Mr Williams said:
"This new motorcycle test is creating problems for those people in rural areas as there are too few centres that are able to administer both parts of the test.
"To use my constituency as an example, the second part of the test can be taken in Builth Wells and the DSA had previously agreed to locate a test site for part 1 just 10 miles away in Llandrindod Wells.
"However the DSA has now determined that the area of land is not sufficient enough so while my constituents can take the second part of their test in Builth Wells, they would have to travel to Newport to undertake the second part - a distance of 60 miles.
"Other possible test pads for part 1 include Swansea or Shrewsbury!"
"For many people, travelling such a distance is simply not possible and many may opt not to take the test and continue to ride on a provisional licence.
"With so many people in rural communities reliant on personal transport for their work and in order to socialise, these proposals are non-sensical.
"I have urged the Government to delay the implementation of the two-stage test in order that these issues can be resolved and hope that common sense will prevail."
