Roger Williams MP shows support for the recognition of British Heroes of the Holocaust

April 2, 2009 2:58 PM

Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, has demonstrated his support for the formal recognition of British citizens who aided and rescued Jewish people and other minority groups during the Holocaust by signing a cross-party Early Day Motion.

Last year, the Holocaust Educational Trust launched an initiative to secure posthumous honours for British Heroes for the Holocaust, such as Jane Haining, June Ravenhall and Major Frank Foley, who risked their own lives and often the lives of their families to aid and rescue Jewish people and others minorities during the Holocaust. The Trust has asked the British Government to review the statutes governing the honours system which currently do not permit honours to be awarded posthumously, except in cases where the individual died engaged in active combat.

Mr. Williams commented:

"British heroes of the Holocaust should be recognised by Britain. While they may have been honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial authority, few received any formal recognition in this country. It is our responsibility and duty towards our local heroes, to do all we can to ensure that communities in this country honour their brave acts".

Het's Chief Executive, Karen Pollock, commented:

"We instigated this project a year ago to highlight the importance of formally recognising the bravery of those people who stood up, risking their lives and often the lives of their family to help others. The Holocaust Educational Trust continues to work towards seeking greater recognition for these individuals to ensure their brave acts are honoured and the atrocities of the Holocaust are never forgotten. I encourage everyone to sign the Trust's Petition to the Prime Minister at: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/UK-Rescuers/".

The text of the cross-party Early Day Motion is attached below and has 87 signatories to date.

If you are a resident of the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
