WILLIAMS WELCOMES PROGRESS ON LLANDRINDOD MAGISTRATE COURTS

Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State of Wales, and David Peter recently visited Llandrindod Police Station with Chris Huhne MP and Alan Butt Philip, Welsh Liberal Democrat lead European election candidate, and saw the custody cells, which have been deemed unfit for purpose.

At the moment anyone arrested in the Llandrindod area that needs to be put in custody has to be transported either to Brecon or Newtown. The journey and return with two policemen takes up to three hours, meaning that very often the Llandrindod police station is left unmanned.

Also, proposals to close the magistrates court in Llandrindod Wells would mean that there would only be one court left in Brecon and Radnorshire and Welshpool would be the only other court in Powys.

Mr Williams said:

"I am pleased to say that through representations made by local county councillors, the Llandrindod Town Council, Kirsty Williams AM and myself, proposals to have a new police station with custody cells, a new magistrates court, a new fire station and a new ambulance station on one site are well advanced.

"The feasibility study has been completed and outline and detailed planning permissions are being sought.

"It is very welcome news that Llandrindod will maintain its magistrates court and a new police station with custody cells can spend more time on the beat rather than transporting prisoners.

David Peter said:

"A new magistrates court will mean that those charged with offences will be able to be dealt with in Llandrindod.

"At the moment a charity I work for very often has to transport young people charged with offences to Brecon for an appearance that may only last less than a minute.

"This is obviously not in the interests of anybody involved in the criminal justice system."

If you are a resident of the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
