Roger Williams MP, Liberal Democrat Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson and Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, has called on the Government to act on the recommendations in Professor Hugh Pennington's report, published today, into the contaminated food outbreak in Wales in 2005.
Mr Williams said:
"Professor Pennington has undertaken a comprehensive review of the causes of this disease outbreak and has raised a number of sensible recommendations, such as regular and unannounced inspections of food premises and increased training for meat hygiene inspectors.
"It is essential that the public can have confidence that the food they are consuming is safe and clearly this was not the case in 2005, when 156 people were taken ill and one child tragically lost their life.
"The Welsh Assembly Government should act on the recommendations as a priority to ensure that similar outbreaks do not occur again."
