Commenting today on figures obtained through parliamentary question, Roger Williams MP, Liberal Democrat shadow Secretary of State for Wales and Liberal Democrat Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson, has called on the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to do more to support the farming industry.
Mr Williams said:
"An answer I received from Jane Kennedy, Minister at the Department of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs, to a recently tabled parliamentary question showed that between 2005 and 2007 the total English income from farming went up from £1.415bn to £1.63bn
"A question tabled in Wales by my colleague, Mick Bates AM, showed that over the same period the total income from farming in Wales has decreased from £142m to £51.8m.
"The figures reflect that whilst England is primarily engaged in arable production, Wales is dominated by livestock farming.
"It is essential that the Rural Affairs department at the Welsh Assembly Government look into what steps they can take to bolster Welsh livestock farming and support it through the current economic climate.
