ELECTRONIC IDENTIFICATION DEVICES (EID) FOR SHEEP AND CROSS COMPLIANCE ISSUES NEED URGENT RESOLUTION- WILLIAMS

December 11, 2008 4:29 PM

Roger Williams MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and Liberal Democrat Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson, has called on Elin Jones, Rural Affairs Minister in the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG), to ensure that the WAG do not give in to threats on the issue of Electronic Identification Devices (EID) for sheep.

Mr Williams said:

"It has been suggested to me that the WAG and Farmers' Unions are being threatened with infraction procedures if the WAG does not introduce EID for sheep.

"I am dismayed at this news as a decision has not yet been reached on this issue.

"One issue that has not received enough coverage is that the inserting of these devices into the ears of young sheep could in itself be a breach of cross compliance issues in terms of animal welfare.

"It is essential that this is resolved as a matter of urgency and the full consideration of these matters must not be disrupted by premature threats of infraction procedures."

NOTES:

Infraction procedures are fines imposed by the EU on nation states that do not properly implement EU Regulations.

If you are a resident of the Brecon and Radnorshire constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
