Commenting on the recent recall of pork products from Ireland and Northern Ireland, Roger Williams MP, Liberal Democrat Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson, has called for better labelling of food products.
Mr Williams said:
"Firstly the public must not panic over this announcement as it relates to a relatively small proportion of meat products and British supermarkets have withdrawn potentially affected stock form their shelves.
"Secondly it is important that consumers do not lose faith in the high quality of meat that is produced within the UK and continue to support British agriculture.
"Thirdly the issue of food labelling needs to be looked at again.
"Most fresh produce is properly labelled so that individuals can be fully informed as to where the product has come from and in many cases the label will even include the name of the farm and the farmer.
"However in the case of ready meals this is often not the case and in situations such as that in Ireland at present it makes tracing products back particularly difficult for concerned consumers.
"In the interests of the consumer and of British agriculture it is essential that food is properly labelled and this issue must be looked at again."
