Commenting today on the news that the Brecon HMRC Tax Office is to close, Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, has called on the government to reconsider this decision in light of the current economic situation.
Mr Williams said:
"This decision seems to defy logic.
"The plan was originally for the Brecon Tax Office to see some jobs cut but remain open with minimal staff in order to assist local residents with urgent issues.
"It now appears as if the office will be closed entirely.
"With many people struggling to meet demands of mortgage repayments and rising fuel bills this decision will be a bitter blow to those affected and to constituents who use this service.
"Rural communities have been disregarded by the Labour Government for far too long and this is yet another example of this abandonment.
"Given the current economic conditions, retaining jobs should be a government priority in order to combat rising unemployment in the private sector.
"This latest news coming so close to the festive period will hit a number of my constituents particularly severely."
