Roger Williams MP, Lib Dem Shadow Secretary of State for Wales and Food and Rural Affairs Spokesperson, has called for government action to assist the 4 million people facing higher charges for electricity in areas not connected to the gas main, as identified in a recent Ofgem report.
Mr Williams said:
"It is totally unacceptable that 4m customers are paying higher prices for their electricity because the electricity companies are taking advantage of their lack of choice due to their not being able to access the gas mains.
"The vast majority of these customers will be based in rural areas where houses are more exposed to the elements and are therefore already facing higher energy bills.
"With rising electricity costs these latest figures will be a major concern for many rural households already affected by fuel poverty.
"The Government must do all it can to improve access to mains gas and ensure the energy companies do not discriminate against those not on the mains gas network."
