Brecon & Radnorshire's Liberal Democrat MP, Roger Williams, has expressed his anger at the fact that, once again, residents in Powys have to put up with the slowest emergency response times from ambulances in the whole of Wales.
Figures from the Office of National Statistics just released show that only 42.1% of ambulances arrived at emergency situations in Powys within the target of 8 minutes, in comparison to the Wales average of nearly 60% and 78.8% in the best performing area, Merthyr Tydfil.
Commenting on the figures, Mr. Williams said:
" While everyone accepts that delivering the ambulance service to a high standard in Powys is difficult, I cannot accept that my constituents have to receive a second-class service. It is true that the very valuable First Responder Service provided by Fire & Rescue Service personnel and others goes some way to plugging the gap, but it should not be used as an excuse for tolerating poor response times from the ambulance service."
" The problem does not lie with the ambulance personnel we have in Powys. They are first class. It is just that there are not enough of them and not enough ambulances stationed in the county. I shall be writing to the Chief Executive of the Welsh Ambulance Service and the Minister for Health and Social Care in the Welsh Assembly Government to urge that steps be taken to rectify this very unsatisfactory situation."
