The prize draw of a new car currently on offer from the DVLA to entice drivers to tax their vehicles on-line or by telephone has been described as a 'further major blow to the Post Office system' by Brecon & Radnorshire's Liberal Democrat MP, Roger Williams.
Describing DVLA's move as 'completely unnecessary', Mr. Williams said:
"Drivers are already being bullied by DVLA and the Government to tax their cars on-line or by 'phone, instead of at their local Post Office, by the use of large print inducements on the renewal forms. So to add the offer of a prize draw to on-line applicants as well is to drive another nail in to the coffin of our Post Office service."
"If people want to renew their car tax on-line or by 'phone they should be able to do so, but the option of renewing at their local Post Office should be given at least equal prominence on the renewal forms and the sort of aggressive marketing now being carried out by DVLA for on-line renewal should be stopped. I believe the offer of free cars in this way is also an improper use of public money."
"The Prime Minister and other Ministers keep telling us that they want to see a sustainable Post Office network for the future, yet they and Government agencies like DVLA are doing everything they can to undermine the Post Office. For example, I am told that new state pension claimants are being told that the Post Office Card Account (POCA) will end in 2010, which is not true and is a further attempt by the Government to discourage people from opening a POCA."
"I and my party will continue to fight for local post offices, which play such an important part in the life of our local communities."
