Answers to Parliamentary Questions posed by Roger Williams, Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon & Radnorshire, about the future of the Brecon Tax Office have revealed that Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has made its proposals for the closure of tax offices across Wales without any idea of how much money it will cost or save.
Commenting on the revelation, Mr. Williams said:
"This is a very odd way to proceed, to say the least. More than two dozen of my constituents face losing their jobs without HMRC being able to produce any rationale as to why. The impact of these proposals on the people concerned and the local economy will be very great, yet as things stand Ministers are unable to say whether any public money will be saved by closing the Brecon Tax office. If there are no savings identified how can HMRC promote this and other closures?
"The answers to my PQs are very revealing and confirm that there is no justification for the proposal to close the Brecon Tax office. No doubt that applies to many of the other tax offices in Wales under threat as well."
