Commenting today on the news that, following an extended consultation period, Post Office Ltd has decided to go ahead with the planned closure of Llyswen and Llanwrtyd Wells Post Offices, Roger Williams MP said:
"I am extremely disappointed at this news. The communities of Llyswen and Llanwrtyd Wells put together a very strong case for their Post Offices to remain open. Local people's hopes of saving their post offices were raised by the announcement that Post Office Ltd was escalating the decision to a more senior level. It shows a complete lack of thought and consideration for the postmasters and those local communities that this escalation produced no change to Post Office Ltd.'s decision. I had received a huge response to my Postcard campaign from these communities and the result is very disappointing. "
"Given the confusion that previous correspondence from Post Office Ltd. has caused, I shall be writing to Post Office Ltd. to ask that it writes to every remaining postmaster and mistress in the Mid Wales area to inform them that this is the end of the review process and they can now get on with running their businesses without further disruption. This is the least that can be expected in my view."
Also commenting on the announcement, Councillor Clair Powell whose ward includes the village of Llyswen said:
"I know this will be devastating news to the residents of Llyswen and Boughrood. They have turned out at the public meetings and have contributed fully to the consultation through letters, emails and by returning Roger's Save our Post Office postcards.
"This decision is a real kick in the teeth after all the hard work the community put in. The closure of both Erwood and Llyswen Post Offices will result in many residents having to travel to Builth Wells or Brecon to access an alternative service when the mobile service is not available. This is just unacceptable".
